Dr. Strentz has taken the most common mental illness maladies and explained them in easily understood terms. After giving actual examples of how a person afflicted with a particular mental condition might act, Dr. Strentz follows up with the negotiations strategy for dealing with individuals suffering from mental disorders or illnesses. For example, a person suffering from Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASP) can be identified by his glibness, his narcissism, high verbal skills, and constant use of rationalization and projection to justify his situation (Remember, “its all about me!”). The tactics for dealing with an ASP are to keep the subject busy and involved in the negotiations process. The subject also must understand that keeping the hostages safe is to his personal advantage.

Each of the mental disorders outlined in Psychological Aspects of Crisis Negotiations gives the reader a clear understanding of that illness and gives the tools to create the opportunity for the negotiator to be successful. While no book will give anyone all the answers when dealing with persons in crisis, Psychological Aspects of Crisis Negotiation should be mandatory reading for any crisis negotiator who considers him/herself a professional.
